Details: Asturias is one of the regions of Spain. A Germanic tribe known as the Suebi first settled the area in the 1st Century BC.

Both the Romans and the Muslims found this area extremely difficult to invade. After Arabs and Moors flooded across the Iberian peninsula in the 8th Century, Asturias became a refuge for Christian nobles and their soldiers. Asturia was the cradle of the Reconquista to fight the Muslim invaders.
