Popular legend has it that this flag has been in use since the 13th century, making it one of the oldest flags in the world. It may have originally represented a wound with a strip of white fabric wrapped around it.

It was used as an independence flag in 1918 and adopted as the national flag in 1922. It was suppressed while Latvia was controlled by the Soviet Union.

It was re-adopted when Latvia gained its independence in 1991.

3'x5' flags are 3ft x 5ft, 36in. by 60in, 91cm by 152cm, 1yard by 1.7yard. This is the most common size flag you see hanging on porches, small flag poles, hanging at festivals, and inside of bars and restaurants.
