Crimea became part of the Russian Empire in 1783. In 1945, Joseph Stalin conducted mass murders and deportations of the original Tatar inhabitants. Stalin accused the Tatars of allying with the Axis during WWII. Crimea was repopulated with people who would be more loyal to the Soviet Union. Crimea was officially annexed by Russia in 1945.

The Soviet Union transferred Crimea to the Ukraine in 1954. In 1991, the Ukraine broke away from the Soviet Union taking Crimea with it.

On May 25th, 2014, the Crimeans held a public referendum to secede from the Ukraine and become part of Russia.

Russia is trying to integrate the district at breakneck speed, while the Ukraine has officially dubbed it Ukrainian territory occupied by Russia.
