Details: This is the flag used by Christopher Columbus on his 1492 voyage to the New World.

The F and Y stand for Queen Isabella I of Castile and King Ferdinand II of Aragon. They were known as the "Catholic Monarchs." Their marriage united what now constitutes most of modern day Spain.

In 1492, the last Muslim leader of Granada surrendered to Ferdinand and Ysabel placing the entire Iberian peninsula under the control of European Christians for the first time in 781 years.

They also financed the voyage of Christopher Columbus the same year.
