The Serapis flag was an Ensign designed by John Paul Jones. He captured a British frigate in battle. However, his own ship and Ensign was lost. Jones sailed the Frigate to a neutral port controlled by the Dutch. The British argued that he was a pirate. Jones quickly designed his own Ensign which the Dutch recognized as legitimate.
